Most people choose to un-
derstand and define their value,
power and worth by the crite-
ria of their "doing." When your
value, power and worth hangs
in the balance according to how
well or how badly you perceive
your performance, it will always
yield an unbalanced, stressful
Our true value, power and
worth is that we are Divine Love
and Wisdom. We do not have
it; we are it. It has never been
a matter of being deserving or
worthy enough to earn it. How
can you earn something you
already are? How can you not
be deserving of what you inher-
ently are?
When we define ourselves by
something other than the truth of
who and what we are, our lives
become a fertile ground for cul-
tivating all kinds of suffering. The
challenge is choosing between
"being" or "doing." Being a force
of Love or doing to achieve love.
Personally, I favor the former
rather than the latter.
First watch what you eat. Food
is your first wave of medicine.
Your diet affects the clarity of
your thoughts in the same way
it affects your body's overall
well-being. Refined white sugar,
white flour, saturated and trans
fats are not foods
that will protect your
quality of attention,
or any other aspect of
the your life for that
foods will also de-
crease overall men-
tal focus and create a
sense of physical agi-
tation. If you want to
improve your focus
of attention and keep
the mind primed, cut out junk
food. A calm mind is a focused
and a present mind. Remember
anything that disturbs the nerv-
ous system will undermine your
ability to stay present with "what
Secondly, allow the sounds,
smells and sensations to gently
keep bringing you back into the
present moment. Sensory organ
stimuli happen in the now. You
can't listen to something in the
future or the past, only in the
present. That is why the sound
of wind chimes and water flow-
ing in fountains is so soothing.
It calmly and lovingly seduces
our consciousness back into the
here and now.
When working at your desk
or driving in your car, take time
occasionally to really feel your
body sitting in the chair. Notice
the feel of the floor or the foot
pedals against your feet. These
sensations will realign you with
the present when you give them
your attention.
Thirdly, do not deprive your-
self of sleep and rest. A tired or
fatigued brain is a
mind that is not re-
generating, not re-
storing its energy. As
a result, the ability to
stay present suffers
dramatically. Dream-
ing is extremely im-
portant for clarity of
focus and the most
under acknowledged
aspect in the quality
of our attention.
When people are
deprived of REM activity (rapid
eye movement) that occurs
during the dreaming stage, the
first casualty is clarity of mind
and the ability to focus prop-
erly. The longer the deprivation,
the greater and more rapidly
the mental decay. People who
have been dream deprived long
enough actually begin to hallu-
cinate -- definitely not a present
moment activity. The good news
is that with quality, uninterrupt-
ed re-cooperative sleep, they
quickly return to normal.
This is where life is happen-
ing. You do not live in the past
or the future; you live now. The
present is where happiness is,
where understanding of your
value, power and worth is. The
meaningful human contact we
all crave and need is in the here
and now. You cannot breathe
into the past or laugh in the fu-

ture. You can only engage in life-
affirming, life-sustaining actions
in the now. A positive, healthy,
expansive future springs forth
from the relationship you have
with the present moment.
The present moment is where
our real power resides. When
we are in the present we have
a "hands-on" position with the
rest of our life. The present mo-
ment allows us the access to
change, grow or modify what-
ever is not working with us. The
present moment is where we
refine, increase, nurture and cul-
tivate what is working for us.
Present moment = power.
If you are looking at your life
and feeling powerless or over-
whelmed, it is nature's way of
letting you know that you have
left the present moment and
point of power. Besides, choco-
late always tastes better in the
here and now... enough said!
