The Human Genome Project,
consideredbysomeatthetime
to bethepinnacleofbio-scien-
tificachievement,wasbegunin
1990 and finally completed in
2000.Fromthestart,theproject
wasextremelyambitious.
Biologists and medical sci-
entists speculated that human-
ity,thoughttobeattheapexof
evolutiononplanetearth,would
haveafargreaternumberofgenes
tomapthanotherspecies,and
thatacompletemappingofour
humangenepoolwouldspeedily
providethemeanstoreduceor
eradicatethescourgesofdisease,
disabilityanddysfunctionforev-
eryone--foralltime.
It didn't happen.Adecadehas
passed since the completion of
theHumanGenomeProjectand
humanityisstillplaguedbydis-
ease,disabilityanddysfunction,
despitescience'sbesteffortstothe
contrary.Hardlyadenthasbeen
madeinthegeneticarmoragainst
thewaronhumanmisery.
Butallisnotlost,itappears
that there are a host of hidden
connections (No surprise there!)
betweenthepowerofthemind
togeneratethebeliefnecessary
toachieveperfecthealthandthe
abilityofourpersonalgeneticsto
anchorsuchbeneficialchangesin
reality.
Itappearsthat,forthegenetic
scientists, more questions have
beenraisedthananswersfound.
Simplymappingtheentirehuman
genomehasnotprovidedthean-
swerstothequestionsthathave
raisedeyebrowsandstumpedbril-
liant minds in research labs all
aroundtheworld.

Themorethequestionspiled

pirical scientists began to real-
izethattheirtidygene-centered
worldwasbeginningtoexperi-
ence the beginnings of a revo-
lution in awareness that would
paralleltheshakeupexperienced
by physicists in the middle of
the twentieth century with the
maturation of our understand-
ingofquantummechanics.The
worldforbothgroupsofscientists
wouldneverbethesame.
Everything that the geneti-
cists believed about human ge-
netics going into the Human
Genome Project had to give
way to mounting evidence to
the contrary by the end of it.
DNAaloneturnedoutnottobe
theholygrailofdiseaseanddis-
ability control. Genetics, it ap-
peared,wasamuchmoreslippery
thing to understand than once
believed.
Asitturnedout,theanswers
tomanyofthegeneticscientists
questionsbegantofilterinfrom
unexpected quarters. Biology
couldprovideonlysomeofthe
answers.Psychologywastopro-
videmanyoftherest.
Biology works hand in hand
with belief to determine our
state of wellness at any given
time.Whatwebelieveinfluenc-
eshowourbodiesfunctionand
how our bodies function influ-
enceswhatwebelieve.Theline
between what is physical and
whatismentalhasbeenerased
byournewunderstandingthat

calledthenewbiologyanditis
currentlyattheforefrontofge-
neticresearchandrapidlygain-

beguntobepublishedinscien-
tificcircles.

ing DNA is called epigenetics.
