startedseeingtheonsetofholiday
bluesinmyclientsinOctober.
According to the American
PsychologicalAssociation,about
19millionadultssufferfromde-
pressivesymptoms.Forsome,all
ofthepressuresofshopping,co-
ordinatingsocialfunctionsand
negotiating family issues bring
anxietywhileothersstartremi-
niscingaboutpastholidaysand
becomeoverwhelmed.
Tthingsthatmaycauseusto
become anxious, down or de-
pressedaremany.Itdoesn'thave
tobethatway.Peopleoftenrecall
highlightsofaThanksgiving,Ha-
nukah,ChristmasoraNewYear
eventfromthepastandholdonto
whattheyrememberasanideal
holidayfromyearsgoneby.
Todaythefactshavechanged;
weareolder,thekidsareolder,
manyofthefamilyhavemovedto
distantplacesandthiseconomy
maybringfinanciallimitations
to many, making it impossible
toreproducetheholidayinour
dreams.Theresultisoftenfam-
ilytensionandholidaydepres-
sionstemmingfromunrealistic
expectations.
Sojustwhatisgoingon?The
behaviorontheoutsideistandem
towhatisgoingoninside.Aswe
starttoslipintoadepressivestate
ofmind,westartprocessingfrom
adifferentpartofourbrain.We
slip into a state called Fight or
Flight.Thegoverningareaofthe
brainforthisstateiscompletely
ontheoppositesideofthebrain
fromwherewethinkandprocess
ourbestthoughtsanddecisions.
As a matter of fact, most of
thethoughtsprocessedfromthis
FightorFlightareaarethoughts
of escape. We escape from the
moment by recalling the past
which causes us to miss all the
new,happymemoriesbeingcre-
ated in front of our own eyes.
OneprocessIdowithpeoplewho
arecaughtinthisstateandcome
toseeksupportiswhenItouch
theirforeheadandaskthemto
focusonmytouch.Whenthey
do,itmovestheirthoughtsfrom
"FlightorFight,"evenifmomen-
tarilytoanewfocuspoint,away
fromtheircurrentstate.
Iuseacustomizedcomputer
program that teaches them to
bringtheirthoughtsfromtheir
current state to the executive
centeroftheirbrainwherethey
createtheirbestdecisionsandbe-
haviors.Here,weworktogether
tohelpthemappreciatethepast
andtobeawareofthepresent.

thoughtpatternssoyouaremore
in the moment and open, and
able to create new positive ex-
periences.Youaremoreableto
thinkandworkfromyourhighest
potentialinsteadofbeingstuck
in a repetitive pattern zone of
Fight or Flight which can only
giveyoulesseffectivefear-based
solutions.
Rememberthatyouaremak-
ing new memories with fresh
results with each thought and
action.Makethempleasant,pro-
active thoughts and deeds and
enjoy each and every moment.
Livethemomentwithloveand
appreciationofyourfamilyand
friends. Making new memories
and new friends can be a great
andrewardinggiftthatonlyyou
cangiveyourself.
Through these techniques,
peoplelearnhowtobeinthemo-
mentsotheycandealeffectively
withthecurrentissues,bepres-
entwiththeirfamilyandfriends
becausethiscreatesamoreenjoy-
ableandproductivepresentand
anevenbetterfuture.
Ifyouhavealovedonewho
is caught reliving "Times Past"
telling them to "Get Over It"
doesn'thelp,itwillonlyaggra-
vateorintensifytheirpain.This
isliketellingsomeonewhohas
a toothache to "Get Over It"!
Maketheholidaysfun,lightand
filledwithlove.
Involveafamilymemberwho
is reminiscing the past. Help
themtocreatenewandhappy
memories of the present, and
to appreciate the great holi-
days we have enjoyed before.
Therearealsoserioushealthcon-
sequencestobeinginadepres-
sivestateofmind--thelonger
you stay in this state of mind,
the more your body produces
adrenaline and cortisol. This
buildupofadrenalineandcorti-
solwilleventuallybeharmfulto
yourbody'simmunesystem.
Thesooneryoucanleavethis
state of mind, the sooner your
bodycanregainbalanceandstart
torepairitselfandyoucanalso
starttomakenewmemorieswith
theonesclosesttoyou.
Itisimportantthatyoufind
helptobalanceyourhormones,
supportyourbodytosynthesize
protein and to maintain mental
well-being. Remember you have
achoice--choosetoliveinthe
presentandmakeyourfutureone
