A New Home!
By Lyda Whiting

On December 1st, The Latest Thing will open their new Healing Center at 1770 Orange Avenue in Costa Mesa, located one block from their former location on 17th Street. There will be a Grand Opening celebration on Saturday, December 8th. The Latest Thing will be offering free readings, drawings, refreshments, entertainment, and balloons, and anyone who mentions this article will receive 15% off of any purchase. This will be a great opportunity to meet the practitioners, consultants and facilitators, sign up for workshops, and explore the new store.

Mary Lou Williams and Kimberly Funk, the mother and daughter team who owns The Latest Thing, are thrilled that their dream of having a healing center where practitioners, facilitators, consultants and students of life can all come together under one roof, has been manifested. With the help of the community, The Latest Thing has been holding monthly meetings all year to create this vision of an expanded center, and now the vision is a reality!

“Mary Lou and I want to personally thank all those who worked with us to manifest our vision and make it a reality,” says Kimberly. “Now it’s time for us to show you how much we appreciate your efforts and invite you to our Grand Opening Celebration so you can see what you have helped us create!”

The Latest Thing Healing Center is welcoming new consultants, practitioners, and facilitators. Applications are currently being accepted for rental of private consultation rooms. There are six private rooms available to rent on a monthly basis to practitioners of a variety of healing modalities. The large, air-conditioned classroom is available for on-going day and night classes, seminars, and workshops. Some advertising is also included with the rental.

“This is a center where healing can take place. You will be able to see a consultant, buy the tools you need, and know that you are not alone,” says Mary Lou. “We take pride in bringing people together who want to make a difference in their own lives and in the lives of others.”

The Latest Thing Healing Center offers classes and workshops on a variety of subjects from Reiki attunement and candle magick to meditation and spirituality. The Mind, Body and Soul Fair on the first Saturday of each month offers an opportunity to sample different healing modalities, meet the practitioners, and discover more about the Center. The First Woman’s Church, Hath-or Chapter, celebrating the Goddess Within and based in women’s and African spirituality, holds its services at the Center on the first and third Sundays of each month.

Currently, the new location is being completely renovated to create a 3380-square foot center of tranquility for the mind, body and soul. This freestanding two-story building, formerly occupied by an antique store called “Zazy Goona,” will have a new look and new landscaping designed especially for The Latest Thing. There is also a private parking lot adjacent to the Center.

The Latest Thing will be offering a wider selection and more variety of gifts, metaphysical supplies, and 12-step items in the new location. New store hours will be 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. The idea for a healing center came several years ago when Mary Lou and Kimberly noticed a gap between the metaphysical community and the general population, and they sought a way to open up dialogues and create relationships that could bridge this gap.

The spiritual advisor for The Latest Thing, Rev. Dr. Crystal C. Bujol, suggested creating a teaching and healing center, an idea that was enthusiastically embraced by Mary Lou and Kimberly. The first classes were held in the evenings after the store closed, with seating around the shelves and displays. With the invaluable input and assistance of Anne Monaghan, owner of Monaghan Communications in Newport Beach, The Latest Thing Healing Center grew in size and scope. To accommodate the teachers’ need for more space and more class time, the original store was remodeled to create a classroom that held 15-20 students. The Healing Center soon outgrew the available space, and the owners began to think about expansion.

The number of classes, workshops and events has continued to grow each year, and the Center is reaching more people in the community than ever before. By creating and deepening relationships between consultants and practitioners of different disciplines and backgrounds, The Latest Thing Healing Center has become an exciting and supportive place for these professionals to make their personal contribution to bringing spirituality and healing into the lives of others.

To become a part of The Latest Thing Healing Center, by renting a consultation room or offering classes and workshops, please contact The Latest Thing, 270 E. 17th Street, Costa Mesa, (949) 645-6211. (After December 1st, the address is 1770 Orange Avenue, Costa Mesa.)
