FENG SHUI
Karma and Relationships

By Jenny T. Liu, M.A.

A lot of people ask why their life is the way it is. Why do you know the people in your life who are affecting you either positively or negatively? Why are your partner, children, and parents the way they are? Why are the people you work with the way they are?

These questions relate to feng shui and karma and the belief and acceptance that everything is connected and happens for a reason. For every cause, there is an effect. This is the law of nature.

In terms of intimate relationships, why do we fall in love with certain people? Why do we marry certain people? Some people say it is love at first sight and they feel compelled to be together. Others search forever for their soul mate. Little do people realize that they wonít find each other until the time is right. You may go through many relationships in your life before you finally meet the person with whom you share a karmic bond and there is the potential of a long-term relationship.

We cannot always see clearly, or control with whom we fall in love. Someone may think they have found the love of their life, but over time, the relationship might change, and the couple wonders why they fell in love in the first place. This is very common because love relationships stem from knowing each other in previous lifetimes.

Whether itís from your last life, or a life previous to the last life, when you meet a person you knew in another life in this lifetime, you feel a connection with them. There is instant recognition, bonding, and familiarity. If there is a karmic bond or debt with this person, you feel a desire to be with them. Karmic debt is not necessarily a negative thing; it just means there is an imbalance that needs to be balanced. Sometimes the debt can be returned within one lifetime, and sometimes it takes more than one lifetime.

Understanding the concept of karma allows you to better understand yourself and others. There is a reason why you have a relationship with every person you know in this lifetime. Exploring past lives reveals positive aspects that can enhance your life today, or shed light on negative aspects that currently affect you, giving you the opportunity to release the negativity. Acknowledging and exploring your karma allows you to learn and benefit in this lifetime.

Before you get married, it is a good idea for you and your partner to get a reading of your birth charts to find out what your karmic bond is. Each year of the bond is called a knot because it ties you together. Maybe when you first meet you have five knots that tie you together. You feel very close and very loving during those five years and you want to do everything for each other.
Every year of that five-year bond you return to each other, a knot becomes untied so at the end of that five-year period, all five knots are untied. You might now feel differently towards the relationship and not as connected to each other. This is not necessarily a negative thing ó it is a transformation.† Everything around us is constantly changing.

The convention of marriage was established by government and religion. Itís not something that is absolutely necessary for humans according to the laws of nature. When people come to me or my father feeling very stressed about separation or divorce because of financial, legal, or social reasons, we explain this new concept to them and it often allows the couple to move apart or separate in a much more peaceful way.

The concept of karmic bonds helps them to accept that their relationship has come to completion and it is time to move on. Thereís a reason they came together in the beginning, and there is a reason why they must move on.

You donít need to look at situations that come to an end in a negative way. It is just one stage of your life. Adultery, divorce, and multiple relationships in peopleís lives†are very common ó more common than the reverse. Staying in one relationship for thirty or forty years is actually rare. Understanding relationships from the karma perspective allows you to see them in a new way.

You gain a better understanding of why you are with a certain person, or why a certain child is your child. If you are constantly giving to them, but they donít appreciate what you give them and are rebellious, that is their karmic relationship with you. If you can understand who your family members are and the karmic relationship you have with them, then there is the potential for adjustment on a mental level.

Understanding relationships using a karmic perspective allows for closure and detachment that is sometimes necessary for moving on. It allows you to move forward. If you can view karma as simply a balance that takes place between two people, then you can start fresh.
