Feng Shui: A Look Ahead at 1999

The aim of the Chinese philosophy of feng shui is to create a sustainable environment that allows us to progress. In order to achieve this, it is vital for us to understand the cycles of nature so we may better prepare for the future. Every year the energies around us change and affect us differently. In feng shui, cosmic energies play a big role in affecting our well-being. When the planets move into a new position on February 16, 1999 (Lunar New Year), the alignment of their energies will have a certain effect on the Earth and its inhabitants. Although the planets are distant from us, their impact on us is undeniable.

In order to survive natural disasters, the ancient feng shui masters were keen observers of the natural cycles. They were astrologers who studied celestial movements as they related to terrestrial and human events. Keeping accurate records and charts, they were able to use empirical data to predict future events. The success and power of the Chinese government for thousands of years depended on the accuracy of these observations and calculations of understanding how the world ticks.

One of the charts still in use today is the Nine Star Chart. It can give us a general preview of what we may expect in 1999 globally, nationally and within our homes. Depending on the direction in which our main doors and rooms are located, the planetary energies can induce certain events to occur in our homes and offices this year. Thus when the New Year arrives, we should make preparations and rearrangements to refresh our homes and offices to enhance positive and neutralize negative energies.

These charts show the numbers 1 through 9 which represent stars or different phases of energy located at the eight directions of the earth. Every year, the cycles of the Nine Stars change. These charts are rather complex and in-depth knowledge is required to properly interpret them and understand what they mean. Nonetheless, it suffices for the reader to simply understand that each of the numbers is innately associated to a variety of natural phenomena that stem from thousands of years of experience and observation of natural patterns. In 1999, we are in the 1st Annual Cycle which is within the 7th Twenty Year Cycle (1984-2003). These charts are indicated by the center numbers:

With the combination of these stars coming together in the center, it shows that 1999, the year of the rabbit, will be an intense atmosphere of bustling energy spurring creativity, transformations and celebration especially for middle-age persons. They will be more up-to-date and focused on fashion. They are more assertive and attain success in their endeavors. Older men are especially more sexually active. However, this may also be a new source of disease and death. Youngsters, on the other hand, tend to be more confused and paranoid. We may see a rise of indulgence and carelessness among teenagers, involving themselves in violence, drugs, sex and gambling. They need more attention and affection.

In '99, the One Star brings energies of new intelligence, spirituality, creativity and open-mindedness especially from the North and Northeastern regions such as Scandinavia, Canada and Japan. Clairvoyants and New-Age leaders in astrology, feng shui and alternative healers will thrive in offering their services to a distressed but more aware world. This year, there are many special and famous messengers traveling the world. More awareness and cultural exchange brings acceptance that stimulates new developments and expansion especially in the biomedical, genetic, computer and ethnic sciences. However, with the Five Star's defeating frequencies, many leaders will be blind and deaf to good advice.

Global leaders, especially male, tend to deal with unprecedented issues in a conservative and uncompromising fashion. World leaders, especially those located in the Western and Eastern regions such as the US, Iraq or China are prone to offend and assault. We may see more Mafia, terrorist activity and anti-America demonstrations. There may be an increase in police, FBI, CIA or related casualties. The Five Star in the center with One and Six indicate that there are going to be big changes in communist countries especially China.

Unusual climate conditions in many areas will cause similar erratic human behavior. With irregular bouts of rain throughout the year, Northern, Eastern and Southern regions will have surplus agricultural production. Also higher temperatures tend to induce more sexual activity as well as larger fruits and vegetables. The One Star indicates more rain especially in central and Southern regions. This means more crops but also an increase of mosquitoes and transmission of disease. The One, Six and Five Star energies show these diseases are likely to be respiratory problems, strokes, aneurysms, kidney problems, neuralgic ailments, new mental phobias and unusual diseases or deaths.

The Southern, Western, Eastern and Northwest regions are likely to suffer natural disasters that influence global economy. They may experience earthquakes, typhoons and hurricanes. This will be a constant reminder of Mother Nature's power to regain ecological imbalance by washing away pollution. The One Star heightens awareness of environmental issues. People are likely to be conservative and recycle more. Large department stores that benefit from sweat shops or lack ecological finesse are likely to suffer. This adds to economic slowdown causing more corporate merges, bankruptcies and an unbalanced global stock market. However, small businesses, especially those in alternative healing, organic foods, preservation and related fields will continue to grow.

Economically, travel and technology especially the Internet should do well in '99. However, this also provides new unsupervised territory for computer terrorists, child pornography and anti-government forces. Specialized inventions related to biochemistry or genetics will progress. Services and consultants who provide repairs and improve existing systems will tend to do well. Service business such as advertisement, restaurant, insurance, and law tend to be slower due to general economic lag. Minimize risky stock investment. Travel brings big changes and transformations this year. Many people move to new homes, get married, have children and embark on new careers.

In our homes and offices this year, the North, Northeast, Southeast and Southwest are in general, the strongest directions. If you have offices, bedrooms or doors in these directions, you are likely to enjoy success and new opportunities this year especially with proper feng shui adjustment. The West, Northwest, East, and South are in general, the weaker directions that bring problems. It is recommended to minimize using these rooms and doors and avoid placing anything unstable in these directions. If these areas must be used, it is wise to make appropriate feng shui arrangements to minimize trouble.

These are some general things we should be aware of to assure a harmonious new year. As a reminder, we all have unique energies and respond differently to our environment, so actual adjustments vary from case to case. A feng shui expert can give a precise analysis and recommend the best arrangements for your home or office.
