Beating Crohn’s and Colitis
By Aleksander Strande, ND, Ph.D

Both Crohn’s Disease (CD) and Ulcerative Colitis (UC) are autoimmune, inflammatory bowel disorders. An autoimmune disease means your own immune system is attacking your body and in this case is inflaming and destroying your gut lining. This happens because of two major reasons: unresolved nervous disorders such as long-term, low-grade anxiety or stress and/or microbial agents. For example, in 90% of Ulcerative Colitis cases, Cytomeglovirus (CMV) has been found to be the culprit. CMV, which is transmitted like a flu virus, is a herpes-like encapsulated virus that is also implicated in severe Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. Inability to heal the nervous system is a sustaining factor for non-recovery in both inflammatory bowel diseases.

In Crohn’s Disease (CD) inflammation and pain is from mouth to anus. In Ulcerative Colitis (UC), the pain and inflammation effects the end part of the colon, including rectum. Patients suffer from exhaustion, abdominal pain, bloating, gas, passing blood and mucous, allergies and intolerances to ingested foods, and malnutrition. Suffering can be debilitating and the only three options currently offered by traditional medicine are steroids, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, or to surgically remove portions of the digestive tract. This of course turns out to be a living hell and the next thing you know you are emptying a colostomy bag.

It does not need to end this way. In fact, it ends this way only if you use an old fashioned, orthodox medical approach. Both diseases are perfectly treatable and freedom is obtainable from the above misery without using a knife. Steroids debilitate the adrenal glands and nervous system even further, and non-steriodal drugs will cause more erosion to the digestive lining. Poisoning of the body with steroidal or non-steroidal drugs is a minor danger and can be recovered and healed naturopathically. Once you remove portions of the digestive tract, your ability to absorb nutrients from food is permanently diminished creating a variety of symptoms including fatigue, fibromyalgia, neurological problems, insomnia, etc. Neither surgery nor eating temporary symptom-relieving chemicals will facilitate complete recovery.

To recover from an inflammatory bowel disease the following areas must be simultaneously addressed: 1. Nourishing and regenerating the nervous system and adrenal cortex; 2. Modulating the immune system to stop self-attack and increasing immune recognition to attack potential invading microorganisms; 3. Treating the symptoms including fatigue, pain, and any other related complaints; 4. Building up a proper lactobacillus flora in the bowels; and 5. Using therapeutic doses of proven herbal medicine.

As most sufferers of CD or UC inflammatory bowel disorders don’t absorb nutrients through the gut very well, “Mickey Mouse doses” from retail stores may help a bit but will not kill the problem. Doses of such healing herbs and nutrients must be very strong on one hand and non-abrasive to the gut lining on the other hand. In a professional naturopathic practice, a combination of liquid bio-available nutrients is dispensed, not only addressing the symptoms, but the cause of disease.

Although diet is not a cause of an inflammatory bowel disease, once you develop one, there is a range of foods that will make the condition worse. These foods include gut-irritating items such as, wheat, gluten, sugar in any form, caffeine in any form, orange products in any form, as well as foods that a person weakened by disease has developed an allergy towards. Therefore, diet is instrumental in the healing process and must be obeyed strictly — more in CD than in UC. Seventy to ninety percent of recovery happens within sixty to ninety days of using a naturopathic approach. After three or four months, symptoms and complaints are usually gone and a healthy lifestyle and diet is continued as a form of maintenance. By that time, a person can handle stress with no anxiety or depression because the nerve system is healed. This is accomplished by nerve and adrenal cortex restorative botanicals.

Pain is gone because the raging onslaught of friendly fire towards the immune system has been halted. This is achieved by a combination of gut lining restorative and immune modulating herbs. Energy, motivation and fibromyalgia are gone due to increased absorption of nutrients that were not absorbed by the sick gut prior to commencement of treatment.

The protocol is very simple: a little bit of liquid herbs every day plus abstaining from an offending “junk food” diet. Seeing so many people healed this way, I am at a loss to understand why someone would choose to go towards a path of horror and hell, however, even those damaged by drugs or surgery can benefit a great deal from a naturopathic treatment approach. It is never too late to heal, because your body has an inherent healing capacity no matter what damage has been done.
